Vortex Dynamics Research Group Seminars

Our group meets weekly (or so) on Tuesdays to have an informal seminar at 1pm room 3B of the Mathematical Institute. The main topic is Geophysical Fluid Dynamics but other topics in the area of Fluid Dynamics are considered.  Everybody is welcome. (Note: as they are group seminars, some talks might be a bit technical.)

Talks 2011/2012

Tuesday 18 October 2011 : Yue-Kin Tsang , Energy injection in two-dimensional turbulence with drag.

Tuesday 1 November 2011 : Chong Tran , A dynamical systems approach to turbulence.

Tuesday 15 November 2011 : Richard Scott , On jets and potential vorticity mixing at large and small scales.

Tuesday 10 January 2012 : David Dritschel , TBA (something about jets I believe).

Tuesday 21 February 2012 : Stefanella Boatto (Universidade Federal de Rio de Janeiro), The Poisson equation, the Robin function and singularities' dynamics: an hydrodynamics approach.

Tuesday 6 March 2012 : Jean Reinaud, Interactions between to QG hetons.

Tuesday 13 March 2012 : Luke Blackbourn, On energetics and inertial range scaling laws of two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic turbulence.

Tuesday 20 March 2012 : Sue Liu, onset of splitting of the stratospheric polar vortex in a global shallow-water model

Tuesday 24 April 2012 : Richard Scott, Transformed Eulerian Mean and all that
I'll give a gentle introduction to the basic theory of secondary circulations in the atmosphere, give an overview of one main outstanding issue, and discuss a simple new idea that suggests a possible resolution.

Tuesday 15 May 2012 : Xavier Perrot, T.B.A.
